Tax Season 2022

21.07.2022 Written by Jessica du Preez, Nolands Tax, Tax Consultant

Tax Season 2022

The 2022 tax season opened on the 1st of July 2022.

Taxpayers who submit their annual returns via eFiling, have until the 24th of October 2022 to submit their returns. Taxpayers may also submit their returns at the SARS branch by making use of an appointment. Please note that SARS will not accept walk-in’s.

Provisional taxpayers and trust annual returns are due by the 23rd of January 2023.

There has been an adjustment to how auto assessments are being attended to. Previously SARS would communicate via SMS or email that an auto assessment had been issued and non-provisional taxpayers needed to log on to eFiling to accept the auto assessment.

For the 2022 tax year, SARS will communicate that an auto assessment has been issued and if the taxpayer is in agreement after reviewing it, no further action is required unless a payment is due to SARS. The taxpayer must take note of the payment due date indicated on the assessment and make sure to pay prior to this to avoid late payment penalties and interest.

If the taxpayer finds that they do not agree with the auto assessment, they will have 40 business days to amend their return before it is considered final.

If the taxpayer is owed a refund, it will be paid out approximately 3-7 days after the auto assessment has been issued.

Provisional Tax 2023/01

The first provisional tax payment for the 2023 year is approaching with payment being due on the 31st of August 2022.

A provisional taxpayer is defined as:

  • A natural person who derives income, other than remuneration or an allowance or advance
  • A company; or
  • A person who is told by the Commissioner that he or she is a provisional taxpayer.

Taxpayers can check their prior year assessment to determine whether SARS deems them to be a provisional taxpayer, however, they must also be aware of the requirements if they have had significant changes in respect of how they earn their income.
