Appointment of New SARS Commissioner
South Africa’s tax landscape is set for a new chapter with the appointment of Dr Ngobani Johnstone Makhubu as the new Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS), effective 1 May 2026.
Dr Makhubu takes over from Edward Kieswetter, whose tenure is widely recognised for helping restore SARS’s credibility, capability and operational strength during a critical period.
This appointment points to both continuity and momentum. Dr Makhubu has served as Deputy Commissioner: Taxpayer Engagement and Operations since May 2023 and has been closely involved in key modernisation and compliance initiatives. His work in expanding auto-assessments and improving digital taxpayer engagement has already helped shape a more efficient, technology-driven SARS.
The timing is notable. SARS has just surpassed R2 trillion in net revenue collection for the 2025/26 financial year, the highest figure recorded in South Africa’s democratic history. That milestone reflects stronger compliance, improved administration and resilience in a challenging economic environment.
Looking ahead, Dr Makhubu is expected to build on this foundation by driving further digital modernisation, strengthening compliance efforts and continuing the focus on tackling the illicit economy and corruption.
For taxpayers, businesses and advisers, the message is fairly clear: SARS is unlikely to take its foot off the pedal. If anything, we can expect a continued push toward smarter systems, stronger enforcement and greater accountability.
As Dr Makhubu steps into the role, all eyes will be on how SARS balances service, efficiency and compliance in the next phase of its evolution.
